
Win Smith (1921 – 2009) was an esteemed leader in Nursing Education in the Illawarra and Bowral communities. When she joined the Zonta Club of Sydney she was the Deputy Director of Nursing at the Bowral and District Hospital.
Win was passionate about nursing and nursing education and helped write a text book – “Clinical Nursing for the Enrolled Nurse”. She also wrote a book about the history of the Bowral and District Hospital “Blessed are they – the store of the Bowral and District Hospital 1889 – 1989”. She also was one of the driving forces behind establishment of a nursing school within a tertiary institution. After her death, a bequest to the University of Wollongong has provided for an ongoing scholarship, the “Winifred Smith Scholarship for Excellence in Nursing” which is awarded annually to students with a clear aspiration for nursing and have been involved in activities that benefit the community.
In 1990 Win was awarded her Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to Nursing Education.

Win was a member of the Zonta Club of Sydney for 20 years. She served as a director and as club treasurer in the 1970s.
