The Zonta Club of Sydney are one of the members of the Keeping Women out of Prison (KWooP) coalition. Club members, particularly those on our Advocacy committee, work together to provide assistance to women who have been affected by the criminal justice system.
One way we are supporting women is with the provision of “Freedom” or release bags which can be distributed to women who are exiting prison by The Miranda Project.
The bags, which are backpacks or bags which can be easily transported, are packed with items such as toiletries, water and water bottles, Opal cards for transport (within the greater Sydney region), gift cards to buy necessities like underwear or clothes, a phone card and a pen and notebook.
We recently were extremely pleased and grateful to receive a donation of $1000 from the Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle to go towards bags for women exiting prison. Our club members worked together to pack five bags this week, and we thank the wonderful members of Zonta Hunter Newcastle for their contribution.
These bags are so wonderful, and such a boost for women leaving custody with very little. They make such a difference to how recipients feel, that someone cares about them. Thank you very much to ZONTA for this invaluable support and very special thanks to Lorraine Orfanidis for enabling this to happen.
