What do an editor of Vogue, an eminent paediatrician turned psychiatric medical superintendent, a renowned soprano, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, a pioneering aviator (actually a few of those!), an Historian and author, a Commissioner of the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission and a designer from the Berlei company have in common? Well they’ve all been members of the Zonta Club of Sydney of course!
The Zonta Club of Sydney have been undertaking work on our archives, and we are pleased that they will be lodged at The Jessie Street Library once in order.
As a club with a history dating back to 1966, we have lot of interesting materials within our archives, including some great photos of past events, Conventions and Conferences. But perhaps the most interesting (to me at least!) are the Membership Directories, which list a veritable Who’s Who of women at the top of a diverse range of fields and endeavours who share the distinction of being a member of the Zonta Club of Sydney.
Although it’s now a bit late for the Centenary year, I look forward to sharing with you some of the women who have been members in order to celebrate both their individual achievements and their contributions through Service and Advocacy to the status of women across Australia and across the world.
We are currently working on a complete list of members, including their classification, years of service and positions served. Once complete, we hope to post it for reference here on our website, so look out for that!
