On Wednesday 18th September the Zonta Club of Sydney held our regular monthly club meeting at Club York in the Sydney CBD.
A smaller than usual group of club members met for our evening of interesting speakers, Zonta business and fellowship – with club members off overseas and the rain making things difficult. Those who were able to attend were lucky to hear from three speakers.
Our first speaker was Digby Hughes, from Homelessness NSW. Homelessness NSW is the peak not for profit organisation that works with its members to prevent and reduce homelessness across NSW. Digby gave us some stark statistics about homelessness, and club members discussed some of the advocacy work which ZCS does as part of the Keeping Women out of Prison coalition.
Our second speaker was Margot Roberts, the recipient of the Zonta Club of Sydney scholarship to the Women’s College at Sydney University. Margot is currently studying a combined Bachelor of Science and Advanced Studies. She spoke about her experiences moving to Sydney to study, and the differences she has found between high school and university studies. Helping students like Margot have the opportunity to attend Sydney University is a wonderful part of the Zonta Club of Sydney’s service award programs.
Our third speaker was a job talk from one of our own club members, Natasha Goulden. Natasha outlined her path to setting up Goulden Legal, via a Rotary Exchange as a student, university studies in Perth and then working at Sydney legal firm Clayton Utz.
After such a wonderful evening of speakers we almost didn’t have time to discuss any business, however we did of course congratulate our Advocacy committee on their recent success of having our motion at Conference, that our advocacy project of assisting women affected by the criminal justice system was taken up as a District 24 project. More on that will follow, but well done to Lorraine and all the Advocacy committee.
Our next club meeting will be held on Wednesday 16th October. If anyone would like to come along to learn more about Zonta and the Zonta Club of Sydney, please email the club at zontaclubsydney@gmail.com
