On Monday 17th June 2019 members of the Zonta Club of Sydney held our annual birthing kit packing day. Club members and volunteers (more on these wonderful people shortly!) worked together at the parish office of St James, on Philip St in Sydney, to pack 600 birthing kits for women in developing countries.
As you may be aware, Zonta clubs throughout Australia partner with the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia to raise funds and pack birthing kits each year. The first kits were in fact packed by the Zonta Club of the Adelaide Hills in 1999. The foundation was formed in 2006 as the projects grew larger, and by today close to 2 million birthing kits have been packed and provided to women across around 20 countries. Many of these kits have been packed by Zonta clubs, and the Zonta Club of Sydney are proud to be involved in this life saving project. Who would have thought that 6 simple items – a sheet of plastic, gloves, gauze, soap, string and a razor blade – could save millions of lives.
As mentioned above, club members were very pleased to welcome our fabulous volunteers from Optiver Asia Pacific to our packing day. Their company supports volunteering, allowing staff a volunteering day as well as participating in various fund raising activities. The team had decided to support the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia for their volunteering project, and had been linked with our packing day through the BKFA website, as it was conveniently held in the Sydney CBD. Our volunteers worked very hard and assisted us to make our packing day a success, and we thank them whole-heartedly.
