International Day for the Elimination of Violence Towards Women

Today is November 25th, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Towards Women. The Zonta Club of Sydney stands with Zonta International and indeed women across the world to say No to Violence against women, and over the next 16 days we will continue to post about issues affecting women both at home and abroad.

In Australia, 53 women have died from violence already in 2023. According to the Counting Dead Women Australia Project, at least 29 of those were at the hands of a current or previous intimate partner. Just this week, there have been four alleged domestic homicides in South Australia, and in late October five women were killed over 10 days.

Today, the government has announced there will be a new online tracker which will provide up to date information on the number of Australians killed by a current or former partner. The “statistical dashboard” will provide accurate data, with Prime Minster Anthony Albanese stating that to end violence against women “we have to be able to measure it”.

Zonta Says No to violence against women. We must do better to prevent these deaths.
